MASON CITY - Ralph P. VEGA, 82, of 4 Third St. N.W. died Monday (Jan. 23, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa.

Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Monsignor Joseph SLEPICKA officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation with the body present will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. There will be a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Scriptural wake service.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or any charity the donor wishes.

Ralph Paul VEGA was born June 27, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Miguel J. and Margarita M. (RAMIREZ) VEGA.

Ralph attended Mason City Public Schools. He enlisted in the United States Navy on Oct. 23, 1942, serving with the naval detachment on Liberty Ship SS Nancy Hanks primarily in the South Pacific. Ralph was honorably discharged on Dec. 15, 1945, as a Seamen First Class V6. After serving his country he returned to Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Joan ALEXANDER in December of 1967, in Northwood. To this union a son, Michael, was born.

Ralph enjoyed watching sports, especially Iowa Hawkeye college basketball. Ralph loved spending time with his grandson, Jesse, family and friends.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, VFW and DAV.

Ralph is survived by his son, Michael VEGA and wife, Laura CHAMPLAIN, of Silver Spring, Md., grandson, Jesse VEGA of Silver Spring, Md., sisters, Mickey WITT of Mason City, Julia and husband, Bill CAREY, of Bancroft, Virginia and husband, Werner KRIECHEL, of Albuquerque, N.M., Cecilia and husband, Rick NELSON, of San Diego, Calif., Eleanor VEGA of Chicago, Ill.; cousin, Peter VEGA, who provided additional assistance, Mason City; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed by many, especially, his grandson.

Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, Miguel and Margarita VEGA; beloved wife, Joan VEGA; sisters, Anita OROZCO and Margaret PEREZ; and aunt and uncle Leon and Maria VEGA.
