MESERVEY — Norma R. SPRAU, 75, of Meservey, died Monday (Jan. 30, 2006) at Good Shepherd Health Center, where she had lived for many years.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney MEESTER of First Reformed Church in Meservey presiding. Interment will be in Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Meservey.

Norma Ruth SPRAU was born June 26, 1930, in Huxley, Iowa, a daughter of Nels and Ruth (JOHNSON) OAKLAND. She attended and graduated from Fertile High School. After graduating from Waldorf College, Norma began teaching in Meservey Public School.

Norma was united in marriage with Sterling SPRAU on Sept. 23, 1952, in Fertile. They farmed and she continued to teach in the Meservey School while raising her family.

Following a stroke, Norma entered Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City in 1992.

Norma is remembered by her family as a wonderful cook and baker, her kitchen was a hub where she welcomed many to visit. While in college, she was part of a singing group and continued all through her life to sing and play piano for church services, weddings and funerals. During Meservey celebrations she took part in the Kitchen Lassie's Band. She was a very patient woman and decorated cookies with a toothpick to make sure the details were right. She was also an avid Vikings and Twins fan.

Norma is survived by a daughter, Pam (Bob) CARLSON of Meservey; son, Scott (Jenee) SPRAU of Meservey; grandchildren, Becky, Zach and Toby CARLSON, Anna (Joe) DUNNWALD, Abby SPRAU, Amanda, Casey and Sterling SPRAU; special niece, Zoe (Amaris) MYERS of Meservey; sisters, Dell (Bill) WRIGHT of Jewell and Marcie OSMUNDSON of Story City.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Sterling, in 1990; son, Kurt, in 2005; and sister, Emelia PEDERSON.
