Joan June RUITER was born on Jan. 1, 1936 at Latimer the daughter of Earl and Agnes (MUHLENBRUCK) LAGE. She was raised and confirmed at the Meservey EUB Church and graduated from Meservey High School.
On Sept. 20, 1953, Joan was united in marriage with Donald F. RUITER at the Meservey United Methodist Church. They farmed around Meservey and she worked as a secretary at Fashion Farm north of Meservey.
In 1967 they moved to Thornton and purchased the Thornton Locker. At this time they transferred their membership to the Thornton United Methodist Church where they have been members since. After selling the locker, Joan worked at the Sheffield Care Center for ten years.
Joan is remembered as the rock behind her family as she was always there for her husband and sons. She wrote in her diary every day and read it frequently as she would remind her sons on the anniversaries of certain events. She loved the outdoors and spent many hours in the garden with her husband Don. She loved her family and especially her grandchildren. Joan liked the simple things in life; she loved to cook and sit on the deck with her husband and watch the world go by.
Joan will be greatly missed until they are reunited by her husband of 52 years, Donald; their two sons: Randy (Suzanne) RUITER, Denver, Iowa and their children: Megan (Brock) TRAETOW, West Des Moines and Bethany and friend Andrew UNGS, Cedar Falls; Danny (Michele) RUITER, Stanton, Neb. and their daughters: Jessica and Richele. She is also survived by her mother, Agnes LAGE, Meservey; mother-in-law, Marie RUITER, Thornton and sister-in-law, Janet (Glenn) HARDESY, Lexington, Neb. and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her father; brother and his wife, Dale (Gloria) LAGE and father-in-law, Bernard RUITER.
