Obituary - Alf Heglund Oines

Clear Lake Mirror Reporter

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Alf Heglund OINES, 85, of Wauzeka, Wis., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at Prairie Maison Healthcare, Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Born Feb. 10, 1922, in northern Norway on the Island of Kvaeoye, Alf immigrated to the U.S. with his parents, two brothers and two sisters in 1929.

The family settled near other immigrant relatives in Galesville, Wis., where he graduated from high school in 1941. He attended La Crosse Teachers College for the fall semester, and when Pearl Harbor was attacked at the end of that year, he enlisted in the Army Air Force.

While training at Helena (Ark.) Aero Tech he escorted Joanne HART, a student at a local high school, to a dance at the base. Alf completed training in piloting four-engine airplanes and joined the 20th Air Force on a mission to set up a B-29 heavy bomber base on Saipan in the Mariana Islands.

After piloting 35 B-29 missions over Japan, Alf returned to civilian life and went to Arkansas to find Joanne. They were married on June 6, 1946, in Helena, Ark., and both attended Michigan State College where Alf graduated with a bachelor or science degree in agronomy and horticulture in 1949.

Alf started working for Swift and Company's fertilizer division in south Chicago. In 1958, Alf and family moved to Niles, Mich., and he started Michiana Chemical Company, manufacturing and marketing fertilizer to area farmers.

Three children were born to Alf and Joanne: Alan, Joel and Peggy. They were all five happy participants and choir members at First Presbyterian Church in Niles. In 1968, Alf sold the business and the family moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where he became an agronomy instructor at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City until he retired.

Alf loved planting trees and gardening with Joanne, sailing his catamaran, and helping build Galilean Lutheran Church. He was a great asset to his younger son and daughter when they built homes.

Alf was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother, Ole (Clara) OINES of Florida; his younger sister, Leikny (Ans) KAVOUKJIAN of Richfield, Minn.; and his beloved daughter, Peggy OINES (Robert) HAMMERSLAG of Essex, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne, of Wauzeka; his two sons, Alan, of Clear Lake and Joel (Gretchen) of Wauzeka; four grandsons, Micah, Jacob, Emerson and Samuel; his younger brother, Edvard OINES of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and his older sister, Olga CHRISTIANSEN of La Crosse.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church of your choice. Greetings may be sent to Joanne OINES in Wauzeka, Wis., 53826.
