PIONEER OF CERRO GORDO CO. CALLED

CHARLES DOUGHERTY PASSES AWAY SATURDAY AFTER MUCH SUFFERING

Death - no respector of person's age or time - travels about the world, reaping its plentiful harvest without ever taking rest. It takes the infant from the mother's arms, the youth from his play, the adult from usefulness, the husband from the wife and the father from his family. It may be in the springtime when all nature is recovering from the wounds of winter, or putting on his cheerful garments; it may be in summer when all living are chanting in endless chorus their happy feelings, or it may be in winter when the earth looks dreary, crowned perhaps with snow and the north winds are playing their wierd (sic) and warning notes through the leafless branches. It may be in teh lonesomness (sic) of the night or while we behold the sun crossing from east to west.

At 11:30 a.m., last Saturday [February 9, 1918] it visited Charles DOUGHERTY and called him home. The arrival was expected. Children, brothers and sisters were assembled - they knew the end was near, and while helpless in the presence of death, with broken hearts and tear-dimmed eyes, they did all that was possible to make the ebbing life of husband, father and brother as comforting and consoling as possible. Death, too, was tender on the occasion. It stole the soul so quietly that one could not tell when the time ended and eternity began.

Charles DOUGHERTY lived through 64 years. He was born in Norristown, Penn., December 23, 1856. In the arms of his mother he was borne to Iowa in 1857. On November 24, 1877, he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen KENNEDY at Mason City, and in the lady of his choice found a loyal helpmate in all the ups and downs of life, and whose presence in the house was always sunshine and warmth. Seven children blessed this marriage, viz: Mrs. Mike McDONOUGH, Mrs. Will NIXT, Mrs. Vern RIGGINS, Mrs. Ralph HOGAN, Misses Loretta and Agnes DOUGHERTY and Everett DOUGHERTY. There are also seven grandchildren.

The funeral was held at St. Patrick's church Monday morning with Solemn High Mass, Father DOUGHERTY, a brother, being celebrant; Father FRENCH of Notre Dame university, deacon, and Father O'REILLY sub deacon. Father MALLOY of Mason city, was Mastr of Ceremonies, and Father BOYLE of Notre Dame university preached the funeral sermon, in itself a masterpiece in which he paid a high tribute to the deceased. A very large crowd was in attendance at the funeral, which goes to testify as to the esteem in which they held the deceased.

Relatives and friends from a distance who atended the funeral were Rev. Father FRENCH, Notre Dame university; Rev. Father BOYLE of Notre Dame university; Rev. Father MALLY, of Mason city; Rev. E. J. DOUGHERTY, of Mason City; Hugh DOHERTY (sic), of Minot, N.D.; Mrs. Mary WADE and daughter Grace, of Des Moines; Mrs. Anna W. DOUGHERTY, of Chicago; Mrs. M. ENNIS, of Rockwell; Dan ENNIS and son Steven of Comfrey, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. S. KENNEDY, of Rockwell; M. KENNON, of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. W. NIXT, of Greene; Mr. and Mrs. M. McDONOUGH, of Rockwell; Mrs. R. J. HOGAN, of Chicago; Misses Dorothy and Francis McGLONE, of Sinsinawa, Wis.; Miss Ella DOUGHERTY, of Dubuque; Mrs. E. COYLE, of Mason City, and Miss Agnes DOUGHERTY, of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. John CAMPBELL, Mr. and Mrs. MARTIN, Mrs. AUGUETTE, Will CONNERS, Henry HUGHES and Neil KELLY of Mason city, and James DORSEY of Swaledale.

The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved relatives in their hour of sorrow.
