E. J. SCHERF, Clear Lake's only remaining Civil War veteran, died here at midnight at his home last night [June 8, 1938] following a long illness which had kept him confined home for some time. He would have celebrated his 91st birthday on June 24. His death was attributed to old age.
Mr. SCHERF was born in [June 24, 1847] 1847 on the Atlantic Ocean, while his parents were migrating to America from [Sachsen] Germany. The family settled in Wisconsin and later moved to Charles City. Mr. SCHERF spent the last 60 years of his life farming near Ventura and living in Clear Lake.
