Francis Van LONE, one of the old and respected residents of Mason City passed away last evening [March 26, 1915] at his home here. He was almost eighty-years-old and had lived for the past forth-nine years at Mason City. Mr. Van LONE came here the year after the close of the Civil war, of which he was a veteran, being in the first Wisconsin heavy artillery [Company A] and engaged in farming. He has made many friends here, many of whom are still residents of Cerro Gordo county and who today learned with deep regret of his death.

For the past three months Mr. Van LONE suffered from a stroke of paralysis. He recovered partially from the attack and a short time ago his friends had many hopes for his speedy recovery. However during the last few weeks he had been growing steadily weaker until the end came last night. He was a member of the Christian church and of the local post of the G.A.R. Death came at his home at 610 West Miller street.

Francis Van LONE was the son of George and Nancy Van LONE and was born in the state of New York on June 6, 1835. He was married in 1861 and his wife [Maria (LEAN) Van LONE] still survives to mourn his death. He leaves one son, William Van LONE of this city and two daughters, Mrs. Ida WINTER of Webster City and Mrs. Maude BAKER ESCONDIDO who lives in California. In addition to these one brother and five sisters survive. They are William Van LONE living in California, Mrs. Margaret SHAWICK and Mrs. Marion HANSEN of Hutchinson, Minn.. Mrs. Jane COON of Mitchell, Iowa, Mrs. Hattie WHEELER of Marionette, Wis., and Mrs. Helen MARTIN living in California. Mrs. COON was with her brother at the time of his death.
