Rites at Clear Lake for former local businessman

CLEAR LAKE -- Lorenz HARMS, 56, Clear Lake, a former Charles City resident, died Monday morning [August 26, 1968] in a Mason City hospital where he was taken Wednesday. He became ill at the Clear Lake Coin Laundry which he owned and operated.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Murley A. SEVERTSON officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens, Charles City. Visitation at Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home will be after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Lorenz Fred HARMS was born Aug. 26, 1912 in Bremer County, the son of Fred C. and Anna HAGENOW HARMS. He attended school at Maxwell Township and farmed in Bremer County. Sept. 24, 1936, he was married to Lulu MUMMELTHEI at Waverly. The couple farmed for seven years and operated a feed mill at Frederika. In 1963 they opened a motel in Charles City and operated it for eight years. He was also a salesman for Badger Northland Farm Equipment Co. The couple moved to Clear Lake in 1962 and opened the Clear Lake Coin Laundry and operated the Amway Distributorship.

He is survived by his wife Lula, a daughter, Mrs. Donald Berlaine (sic, should be Verlaine) THOMAS, who with her husband owns and operates the Lake View Motel in Clear Lake; his mother, Mrs. Anna HARMS, Denver; a granddaughter; two brothers, August , Tripoli, Eric, Readlyn; five sisters, Mrs. John (Elva) PIPHO, Readlyn, Mrs. Wally (Alita) KELLER, Hayward, Calif., Mrs. Harold (Delores) MEIER, Waterloo, Mrs. Harold (Luann) KAISER, Waverly, and Mrs. Harold (Carolyn) HAPPEL, Strawberry Point.
