RICHARD L. OVERTURF

Johnston

Richard Lee Overturf, 48, of Johnston went home to be with the Lord peacefully on December 30, 2007. He spent his final days at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, surrounded by family and a host of friends. He was born June 3, 1959, in Mason City, Iowa, to Donald and Lillian Overturf.

Richard graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School in 1977 and then pursued a B.A. Degree in Business Education from Buena Vista University, where he graduated in 1981. On June 2, 1984, Richard was united in marriage to his best friend Delynn Renee Minter at the Oskaloosa Church of the Nazarene.

While going to school Richard worked part time at the family restaurant in Thornton, Iowa. Following graduation he taught high school business classes at the Fremont Community School. After teaching, Richard worked at several Des Moines area companies: as an accountant for Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler and Hagen Law Firm, as a loan closer for The Rock Mortgage Service, and as an accountant for his current employer, Sink Paper and Packaging.

Richard was a faithful member and servant at First Assembly of God Church in Des Moines, Iowa, coordinating and baking for Alpha dinners, Daddy Date Night, and the men's prayer breakfasts. Richard also loved to entertain and was well-known for his dinner parties and holiday gatherings. Friends and family will miss his skills in the kitchen, especially his delicious homemade cinnamon rolls, cheeseburger soup, cheesecake, and chocolate chip pecan pie.

His family includes his wife of more than 23 years, Delynn Overturf, of Johnston; a mother, Lillian Overturf, of Mason City; a sister Debra (and Richard) McLarty, of Sioux City; a brother Larry Overturf, of Clear Lake; parents-in-law Mearl and Donna Minter, of Oskaloosa; and brother-in-law Micheal (and Jackie) Minter, of Oskaloosa. He is also survived by nieces, Amanda, Ashley, and Trisha; nephews Andrew and Bill; great nieces, Andria, Grace, Emma; great nephews Billy, Bo and Jack; friends; neighbors; and Rascal, his canine friend. Richard was preceded in death by his father Donald Overturf and grandparents Harry and Elaine Overturf.

The family will receive friends at Des Moines First Assembly of God Church on Merle Hay Road on Thursday, January 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. Viewing will be held at Oskaloosa Church of the Nazarene Worship Center on Friday, January 4, from 1 to 3 p.m., with family greeting friends from 2 to 3 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 4, at Des Moines First Assembly of God at 9 a.m. with the Reverend Dave Beroth officiating. Interment will be in the Oskaloosa Forest Cemetery Friday, January 4, at 3:30 p.m. with the Reverend Dave Childers officiating.
