An Old Resident Called

Mrs. R. T. Lane passes away at her home in Swaledale, aged 73 years. First school teacher in Mt. Vernon Twp.

Death, Sunday afternoon, took from this life Mrs. R. T. Lane, of Swaledale, Iowa, aged 73 years, she succumbed to pneumonia. Mts. Lane was one of the pioneer residents of the county and was the first school teacher in Mt. Vernon Twp, conducting the school in her home during the summer of 1869, her own children being the pupils with one or two of the neighbors children. Her husband Richard T. Lane was a member of the first township organization.

Amanda R. Staples Lane was a native of Massachusetts and was married to R. T. Lane, who was a widower, April 1, 1860. To them five children were born. Mrs. Abbie Babcock and Miss Dora Lane live in N. Dak., Mrs. Willard has been living with her parents the past few months while Mrs. Corey lives in Iowa, and Miss Nannie who is at the home.

The family came to Wisconsin in 1864 and to Iowa in 1869. Mrs. Lane organized the first school on what is now the Ed Nichols farm west of Burchinal, five miles. The first term her own children were the only pupils but the next term two pupils were added in the children of Samuel Johnson. The first marriage in the township was Miss Abbie, she married George Babcock, the ceremony being performed by the Rev. Milton Franklin. The first birth in the township was that of Miss Nannie on June 25, 1874.

Mrs. Lane was a staunch member of the M. E. church all her life. The funeral occurred today.

This was taken from a newspaper in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa around January 13, 1906 or 1907. I would like to know which date is correct and which newspaper, if it's available.
