Funeral services for Henry A. Johnson, 91, retired farmer and hatchery operator, were held at Bethany Lutheran church, West Branch May 14 with the Rev. Mary I. Schweicker officiating. Pallbearers were Alan, David, Brian, Kevin, Kurt and Robert Johnson and Ryan Benson, his grandsons. Shirley Sondergard was organist and Deanna Wesimann, soloist. Burial was in the West Branch cemetery with military honors.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion of Iowa Foundation.

Mr. Johnson died at Veterans Administration; Medical Center, Iowa City, May 12.

The son of John C. and Bethilde Jensen Johnson, he was born at McNabb, Ill. July 21, 1895. He was married to Emma Christensen at West Branch Aug. 25, 1920. She died Dec. 27, 1964. He married Clara Christensen at Orion, Ill. July 11, 1966.

He farmed near West Branch from 1921 to 1939 when he moved to West Branch. He operated Johnson's Hatcheries in West Branch for 28 years, retiring in 1958, moving to Irion, Ill. in 1960. He had most recently lived at the Cookson Memorial home.

Mr. Johnson was a past president of the West Branch Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the West Branch city council. He was a veteran of World War I, serving from July 22, 1918 to April 2, 1919.

He was a life member of the Channcey Butler Post of the American Legion in West Branch, a longtime member of Bethany Lutheran church, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many years and as president of the congregation.

He is survived by his wife, Clara, West Branch; a daughter, Ruth Benson, Polo, Ill., a son, Donald E. Johnson, Alexandria, Va.; 12 grandchildren, 8 great-granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
