Funeral services for James Russell Lyle, 62, will be held at the United Methodist church at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9 with Dr. Jerrold Swinton officiating. Burial will be in the Tipton Masonic cemetery. Pallbearers are Lyle Grove, Glenn Fear, Bill Leighty, Robert Peck, Richard Moon and Keith Whitlatch. Sylvia Gould is organist. Visitation is at the Sheets & Son Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. May 8 and at the church from 9 a.m. until the service.

Mr. Lyle was killed in a 2-vehicle accident May 6.

The son of Guy E. and Ruth E. Rittenhouse, he was born at Keota June 10, 1922. He graduated from Keota high school and attended Parsons college leaving at the end of his junior year to enlist in the Marine Corps. He served in the Marines from July 12, 1944 to July 1, 1946. He was in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations from Jan. 8, 1945 until July 1, 1945.

He was in combat on Okinawa and the Ryukyus from April 1 to June 30, 1945 and was a member of the occupation forces in Japan from Aug. 30, 1945 to June 14, 1946. He was discharged as a private first class.

He was married to Erma F. Turnipseed at Washington, Ia. May 23, 1948. The couple lived in Washington before moving to Tipton where he operated a filling station on Iowa 130 at the east edge of Tipton. He was employed by the Iowa Department of Transporation for 25 years, including 18 years as foreman at the state maintenance shop.

Mr. Lyle was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, the Optimist club, the Tiger Booster club and was the oldest member of the Tipton fire department, having joined in May, 1958.

He was also on the board of directors of the Work Activity center and the Senior Citizens. He was a member of the United Methodist church, having served in many capacities and in mission and evangelical work. He was involved in working with young people within and outside the church.

He was a member of the Parsons college track team and renewed his interest in running, participating in many marathon events. He was an outstanding runner in his age group and a familiar figure on Tipton streets and at the school track on his daily workouts.

He is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, Mrs. David (Sally) Graversen, Topeka, Kans.; Mrs. Donald (Susan) Peck, Jackson, Mich. and Sherry Mahoney, Tipton; 6 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Rita Gullett, Speedway, Ind. and Shirley Bohr, Wellman and 3 brothers, Richard, Francis and Charles, Keota. He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
