Funeral services for Wilbert E. Gottschalk, 66, were held at the Chapman Funeral home Aug. 28 with burial in the Clarence cemetery. Mr. Gottschalk died at Veterans hospital, Iowa City Aug. 25.
Born in Elmhurst, Ill. May 17, 1918, he was a veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations with the 93rd infantry division, taking part in the Luzon, New Guinea and Ryukus campaigns. He received the purple heart and the Combat Infantry badge. He was in service from Oct. 16, 1942 to Nov. 15, 1945, including more than 15 months overseas. He was a member of the American Legion at Clarence. He had been a service station attendant.
He is survived by a daughter, Melissa Bean, Maquoketa; a son, Danny; a stepson, Gary Crabtree, both of Oxford Junction; 2 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and a brother, Vernon, Cedar Rapids.
