Funeral services for Ernest J. Howard, 78, a native of Cedar county, were held at Monticello Feb. 8 with burial in the Sacred Heart cemetery. He died at a Monticello hospital Feb. 6.

The son of John Z. and France Moore Howard, he was born in Cedar county Jan. 15, 1897 and was married to E. Albertina Brennan April 19, 1922. For many years they operated the Cedar Bluff store. Prior to his retirement, he was an orderly at Veterans hospital, Iowa City.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Richard (Mary Ellen) Wilson, Frederick, Md.; Mrs. Kenneth (Marilyn) Peterson, Monticello and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Luthro, Dubuque; a son, Duane, Cedar Rapids; 19 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ralph and Russell, both of Iowa City and 5 sisters, Eunice Howard, Grinnell, Bernice Howard and Mrs. Earl (Elaine) Jennings, both of Iowa City, Mabel Fiala, Solon and Mrs. William (Rachel) Billings, Doyle, Calif. His wife died in 1973.
