14 November 1968 - The Tipton Conservative

Allen Lee Schmidt, 1967 Tipton high school graduate, died Nov. 7 of wounds received in combat in Vietnam the day before. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen W. Schmidt, Davenport, were notified by the department of the army that their son had been wounded Nov. 5. Nov. 8 they received a telegram that he had died of the wounds.

Schmidt died of wounds received on a combat mission. He was hit by automatic small arms fire and was shot 5 times in the abdomen, chest and right shoulder.

He had been assigned to C company, 2nd battalion, Seventh Cavalry Regt. of the 1st Cavalry Division. The company with which he served engages primarily in reconnaissance missions and it is believed that he was either in a helicopter or had just landed when he was fatally injured.

In a letter to Rick Christensen, a classmate at Tipton high school, dated Oct. 23, he said that he had arrived in Vietnam, but had not yet joined his outfit.

Schmidt went into the army under the selective service in July and took basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas and advanced infantry training at Fort Ord, Calif. He was home on leave at the time of the Tipton homecoming before reporting to California for overseas assignment.
