Last rites for Lewis W. Mathews, 85, retired farmer and banker, will be held at 11 a.m. today (Jan. 25) at First Methodist church, with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers are L. D. Suchomel, James Moore, Richard Ferguson, Wayne Miller, James Casterline and H. W. Fields. Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Olsen and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith will be in charge of flowers. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Riedesel are vocalists.

Mr. Mathews died at his home in Tipton Jan. 23.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Mathews, he was born Oct. 14, 1882 on the family farm 4 miles south of Tipton. He graduated from Tipton high school and Palmer Business college, Cedar Rapids.

He was married to Edith A. Fraseur March 12, 1924. She died Jan. 6, 1929. He was married to Edith J. Chapman June 22, 1949, at Denver, Colo.

He was a well-known farmer and stock raiser in Cedar County for many years. He was also a banker, having served as an employee, director and president of the Tipton National bank, the predecessor to the Tipton State bank.

A lifetime resident of the Tipton area all of his life, except for several winters spent in Florida.

Mr. Mathews was a member of the Tipton Masonic lodge, the DeMolay consistory at Clinton and the Kaaba Shrine in Davenport and the Odd Fellows and Rebeccas in Tipton.

He was a member of the Methodist church and served on the church board for many years.

He is survived by his wife, a step-son, Paul L. Chapman, Clarence and a grandson, Paul L. Chapman Jr., Clarence, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters and a nephew, Roger W. Bolton.
