John A. Hemingway, 49, died suddenly Oct. 7 at his home near West Branch, following a heart attack.

Funeral services were Oct. 9 at Iowa City, with the Rev. Roger Tappmeyer officiating. Burial was at West Branch.

Mr. Hemingway was born May 4, 1917, at Lisbon, the son of Grant and Mae Jack Hemingway. On Feb. 13, 1942, he married Bernice James at Kirksville, Mo.

A veteran of World War II, he was a past commander of Chauncy Butler Post of the American Legion, and a past district commander of the Iowa American Legion.

He was also a member of the West Branch Methodist church; a member of Wapsinonoc Masonic Lodge No. 381 at West Branch; president of the Springdale Mutual Insurance association, and chairman of the Cedar County Soldiers' Relief Commission.

He recently was employed in the sale department of the Hales and Hunter Co. in West Branch.

Surviving are his widow; 3 sons, Thomas, at home, John, a student at Iowa State University, and James, a member of the Air Force Band, stationed at Wright-Patterson Base, Ohio; 3 sisters, Mrs. Wilford (Margaret) Haulson, Hayfield, Minn.; Mrs. Harold (Ruth) Hitchcock, Laurens, and Mrs. Donald (Mary Lou) Davidson, Urbana, Ill; and his mother, Mrs. Mae Hemingway, West Branch.
