Frances Darlene Thumma, 96, of Tipton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 15, 2021, after losing her 14-year battle with Alzheimer’s at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton, IA. A private family funeral will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Fry Funeral Home and will be officiated by Pastor Jon Smith. Interment will follow at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery.

Frances was the eldest of 11 children born to Joseph and Lela (Gauger) Thompson, on June 25, 1924 in Muscatine. She attended school in Letts, IA and graduated from Wilton High School. After graduation, Frances worked at the Button Factory in Muscatine.

In 1946, Frances and Albert Scorpil were united in marriage and the couple moved to a farm South of Tipton. Frances and Al were blessed with 1 Son and 7 Girls. They were one of the founding members of the Tipton Bible Church and Tipton Christian Academy, where, their children attended school.

Al passed away in March 1959 from a brain aneurysm. Frances was faced with managing the family farm and raising the children on her own. She was fortunate enough to have met Dale Thumma whom she married Nov, 23rd 1960. Dale soon became a loving husband and father and together they raised the family, worked the farm and were devout Christians through out their lifetime.

Frances enjoyed teaching Sunday school, gardening, cooking, baking and hosting family reunions where she lovingly and gently smiled and pinched each of her grandchildren’s cheeks. Later in life Frances and Dale enjoyed traveling to Florida and Pennsylvania where they visited family and friends.

Survivors include 8 children: Patricia (Ron) Dickey of Wilton; Marilyn (Wayne) Nebergall of Tipton; Steven Scorpil of Tipton; Kathryn (Leo) Grosjean of Fort Meyers, FL; Ruth (Mike Rooney) Nebergall of Cedar Rapids; Nancy Smith of Coralville; Carol Tholen of Tipton; and Deborah (Bret Kohl) Latare, of Cedar Rapids; sister, Bonnie White of Muscatine; along with 23 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her husbands, Dale Thumma and Albert Scorpil, parents Joseph and Lela Thompson, four sisters, and four brothers.

A memorial fund has been established in the name of the Tipton Bible Church. Memorials may be mailed to Marilyn Nebergall, 104 Bel Aire Ct., Tipton, IA 52772.
