Funeral services for Raymond Joseph Benda, 68, Iowa City, longtime Cedar Bluff general store proprietor and a director of the Tipton State bank, were held Monday at Iowa City.

Mr. Benda died at 7:45 p.m. Friday in Mercy hospital in Iowa City after an illness of about two years.

Burial was in the new section of St. Joseph's cemetery in Iowa City. The rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Oathout funeral chapel.

Mr. Benda was born May 12, 1895, in Emmetsburg. After graduation from Emmetsburg high school, he moved with his parents to Cedar Bluff where they operated a general store.

After his marriage to Mary Suchomel in Iowa City in 1925, he assumed full ownership of the store. Later he served as Cedar Bluff postmaster until the post office was closed in 1953.

He moved to Iowa City in 1947, but continued to operate the store in Cedar Bluff until 1955.

Mr. Benda was a member of St. Wenceslaus church in Iowa City, the Holy Name society, the Tipton State bank board of directors, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and the Loyal Order of Moose. He was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Joseph D. and Donald R., both at home; one daughter, Mrs. Milton (Dorothy) Vincent of Elkader; and two grandchildren. A sister, Josephine, preceded him in death.
