May 28, 1936 - The Clarence Sun

Anna Rhodes, the youngest child of Mitchell and Catherine Heck, was born at Iowa City February 24, 1866, and departed this life May 22, 1936, having attained the age of 70 years, 2 months and 27 days.

She was married to Wallace O. Rhodes September 26, 1894, at Lone Tree, Iowa. Two years after their marriage, they moved to Knox county, Missouri, where they lived on a farm until September 3, 1913, when they with their family of four children, came to Cedar county, Iowa. They lived for a short time in the Clarence community and then moved to Stanwood where they resided until the death of her husband on March 25, 1931. Since then the deceased has made her home with her children.

She received her education in the schools of Riverside, Iowa. At the age of eighteen, she united with the Methodist church. She remained in this communion until her marriage when she became affiliated with the Church of the Brethren. She was ever a conscientious Christian, seeking to know and do the works of righteousness.

She and her husband were of the friendly sort and their home was always hospitable to any who came within its portals.

The deceased was a true mother, always interested in her children, teaching them the ways of uprightness and virtue. Her last manifested interest was in behalf of her little grandson whom she had never seen. Having an intense desire to see him, she was taken to Hopkinton to spend a short time with her daughter.

Having been in failing health previously, she contracted pneumonia which shortly became fatal.

While all her friends will miss her genial smile, she will be more greatly missed by her immediate family. They rise to call her blessed, ever remembering her sacrificing love and motherly devotion. Her life will ever be a pleasant memory to them and an inspiration to face the tasks that still lie in the future.

She leaves to mourn her passing her four children: Ruth Hegarty of Clarence; Jane Wheeler of Hopkinton; Willa of Oakdale; and Waldo of the C.C. C. camp at Solon; and five grandchildren. Beside these, a number of more distant relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Pleasant View church, Monday, May 25, 1936, at 2 p.m., in charge of Elder U. J. Fike.

Burial beside her husband in the Stanwood cemetery.
