6 February 1936 - The Lowden News

Two of the three small children of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Reid burned to death Friday when a fire destroyed the family home in Stanwood. The children were Theodore, 4, and Jimmy 7 months of age.

Mrs. Reid had locked her children in her home and gone to the postoffice to see if a letter had arrived from her husband, a metal spinner at New York City.

Returning, she found the dwelling in flames. She ran to the door and rescued Louis 2, who had fallen at the doorway. He was badly burned.

Attempts to go after the other children failed. Henry Schneider broke in a rear door but was unable to enter because of the smoke and flames. Billy Servalis and John Whitmore tried to enter through a side window but were driven back.

Funeral services for the two little boys were held in Stanwood Sunday afternoon with burial in the Stanwood cemetery.

The Reids have been in the United States only six years, coming from Germany. They settled in New York City. Mrs. Reid and the children came to Stanwood last fall because the parents thought the country air would be good for the boys.

Mrs. Reid agreed to burial of her sons in Stanwood because the family had no connections in New York City. Whether she plans to remain in Stanwood was not known Saturday.
