July 18, 1890 - The Clarence Sun

Yesterday morning a telegram was received by Dr. T. J. Baird announcing the death of his mother, Mrs. A. K. Baird, which occurred Wednesday at Salt Lake City, Utah, where Mr. and Mrs. Baird were visiting with their daughter Maggie. Mrs. Baird was feeling remarkably well up to last Thursday, when she was taken ill for a couple of days, followed by paralysis, which probably caused her death. The news was a sudden and severe blow to Mr. Baird and his sister, Mrs. Bennett, who is visiting here and they sympathy of the entire community will be extended to them, as well as all members of the afflicted family. The remains will probably reach here on the late train Saturday night.

The funeral of Mrs. A. K. Baird occurred Monday forenoon from the residence of Dr. Wm. Greig, Rev. Downing officiating assisted by Rev. Manning, followed by interment at this place. As announced last week Mrs. Baird died at Salt Lake City where, accompanied by her husband and grandchild, she was visiting with her daughter Maggie, the cause being paralysis, resulting from hemorrhage of the brain. Owing to some delay the remains did not reach here until Monday morning and were accompanied by the afflicted husband, daughter and grand-daughter. At the depot they were met by their son Dr. Baird, and daughter Mrs. Bennett, a number of our citizens and about fifty of the good people of Mt. Vernon, largely members of Rev. Baird's congregation at that place, who had come down on the early train to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the deceased and add what comfort their presence might bestow upon their pastor and his bereaved family. The floral tributes from these people were very fine. From Wyoming where Rev. Baird had some time ago been pastor for about twelve years, there was also a number present. Deceased was born in Edinburg, Scotland, August 31, 1831, and came to this country in early life, settling with her parents in Canada. Was married to Rev. A. K. Baird in 1861 and together they came from Canada in 1865. They made their home here for a while, Rev. Baird filling the pulpit of the Presbyterian church. Since then they have resided at various places, their home at the time of her death being Mt. Vernon. Where, as here, and wherever known, as we learn by testimony of friends, she was loved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
