2 May 1890 - The Clarence Sun

Another cloud of sorrow has cast its shadow over our community and another family mourns the going to his "home over there" of one of its members. For several days Freddy, the eleven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Werder, had been ailing, but no dangerous symptoms manifested themselves until Friday, when his sister, Mary, was taken sick and Saturday morning Dr. Wyant pronounced the latter's disease diphtheria. At once a quarantine was put upon the family and all possible precautions taken. Sunday Freddy was able to be up until about three o'clock when he went to bed and between five and six he died. Monday Dr. Sansom, of Tipton, was called in consultation in Mary's case, and at the time of writing she is better with hopes of recovery. It was deemed best by the School Board to close the schools for two weeks, in order to prevent any possibility of spreading the disease. No other cases have manifested themselves and we hope, while sympathizing with this sorely afflicted family, that there will be no more cases.
