December 7, 1961 - The Tipton Conservative

Cecil Overbaugh, 81, and Mrs. Tina Lamont, 86, were instantly killed in a 2-car crash on fog-shrouded county highway "C" about a mile and a half south of Mechanicsville about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Hugh Lamont, 55, was seriously injured in the accident and underwent surgery at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids Tuesday. She received fractures of the hip, left knee and right arm.

Overbaugh was driving south from Mechanicsville and Mrs. Lamont, with her mother-in-law as a passenger, was driving north when the cars collided on the black-top highway south of the Floyd Sievers farm residence. The highway is straight where the head-on crash took place, but visibility at the time of the accident was almost "zero".

The Overbaugh car remained on the highway after the crash. The Lamont car came to rest on its wheels in the ditch on the east side of the road.

Mr. Overbaugh had his car serviced for winter at a Mechanicsville garage and was returning home. He lives less than a mile from where the accident took place.

Mrs. Lamont was returning from the Guy Mitchell farm home, about 2 miles from the scene of the accident, where she had taught a class in ceramics.

Mr. Overbaugh was pinned in the front seat of his car. Death was due to crushing chest injuries. Mrs. Lamont, who was riding in the front seat beside her daughter-in-law, was thrown under the dashboard. Her death was due to multiple crushing injuries. Mrs. Lamont was pinned behind the steering wheel.

The accident was discovered by Dwight Green of Mechanicsville. He had driven from Mechanicsville to the Walter Nanke farm to see his father who was visiting there. He passed the spot where the accident took place shortly before 6 p.m. When he returned, less than 10 minutes later, he found the wrecked cars. He called a doctor and the Cedar county sheriff.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lamont were held Dec. 6 at the Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville. Burial was in Meriden. Mrs. Lamont had spent the winter with her son in Mechanicsville for many years.
