Ernest C. Schmitt, 84, of Davenport, formerly of Durant, died Sept. 27 at the Mercy hospital, Davenport, after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 27, 1877 in Davenport.

Jan. 10, 1900, he married Ella Deihn at Davenport, who preceded him in death in 1939.

A past master of the Wilton Junction Masonic Lodge and the Consistory and Kaaba Shrine of Davenport, Mr. Schmitt operated the Durant bakery for 45 years, retiring 16 years ago.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Iona) Biester, Davenport; a brother, Ray Schmitt Thorp, Wis.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose McQuickin and Mrs. Mary Schneden, both of Rock Island, Ill.; and a grandson.

Funeral services were Sept. 9 at Durant. Burial was at the Durant cemetery.
