William Samuel Johnston Jr., 16, died at his home Oct. 13 of rheumatic fever. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville, with the Rev. George Gallaher in charge. Burial was at Hopkinton.

Pallbearers were Allen Ahrens, William Tjaden, David Tjaden, Norman Boyles, Cary Rhoads, and Robby Pieper.

The son of Walter Guthrie and Dorothy Richardson Johnston, he was born on a farm southwest of Mechanicsville April 7, 1940. Except for the first two years of his life, which were spent in Belle Plaine, he lived on a farm near Mechanicsville.

He attended the Tipton school. At the age of 10 he became the victim of rheumatic fever.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Janet, and his paternal grandmother. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Joan and Beverly; two brothers, Donald and Paul; his paternal grandfather, William S. Johnston, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos C. Richardson.
