7 August 1891 - Clarence Sun

Last Friday evening Mr. E. B. Simmons and wife returned from Evanston, his daughters coming Saturday evening, preparatory to making this their home again after about a year's residence at that place. On Saturday he was greeted by many old friends with warm grasps of the hand that spoke of their regard for him in the most earnest manner. Sunday morning he attended services at the Presbyterian church and in the evening at the M.E. church, retiring in his usual health and imagine, if possible, the shock to his family and the people in general by his sudden death which occurred about two o'clock Monday morning the immediate cause being heart disease. For a year or two his health had been very poor but in response to friends Saturday expressed himself as feeling much better. His son Parke and son-in-law M. B. Cottrell, at whose home they were stopping were visiting at Waukesha, Wis. and reached here Tuesday morning in response to a message bearing to them the sad news. Deceased was born at Mansfield, O., March 8th, 1833, and came to Iowa about 1850, locating at Tipton where he remained until 1865, when he removed to Clarence, which has since been his residence. He was married to Ann Amelia McLeod April 3d, 1857, and is the first in the family to be thus taken away his wife, three daughters and one son remaining to cherish the memory of a loving husband and father. He united with the M.E. church in 1874 and has ever been an active worker in the church and Sunday school. The funeral services were held at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Cottrell Tuesday afternoon Aug. 4th, conducted by Rev. Davis assisted by Rev. Downing followed by interment in our beautiful cemetery.
