29 August 1957 - The Tipton Conservative

Leonard Johannsen, 59, of Durant, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon in a head-on collision on highway 6 about a mile east of Wilton Junction.

Johannsen died at 3:25 p.m., about an hour after he was taken to Mercy hospital in Davenport.

A passenger in the other car, Mrs. Ernest Goebel, 36, of Moscow, was reported in "good" condition at Muscatine General hospital with severe lacerations. The driver of the car, Ivan Dierdorff, 30, of Wilton Junction, escaped injury.

Highway Patrolman Al Chrystel said Johannsen, alone in his car, was driving west on the highway when another car driven by Everett Rorick, 70, of Wilton Junction, turned onto the highway.

Chrystal said Johannsen swerved to avoid a collision with Rorick's car and hit the Dierdorff car coming in the opposite direction.

Johannsen was born April 11, 1897, at Manning, and married Alvena Martens Nov. 28, 1923, in Davenport.

He was a member of the Walcott American Legion post, 548, and the Wilton Junction lodge No. 167, A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Della Johannsen, Davenport, and Mrs. Henry Kroeger and Mrs. James Paustian, both of Durant; a son, William, Durant; two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert Martens and Mrs. William Schlapkohl, both of Durant; four brothers, Herbert, Durant, Edwin, Wilton Junction, Albert, Modesto, Calif., and Harvey of Wisconsin, and six grandchildren.
