Last rites for Mrs. Martha Hawley, 88, former West Branch resident, were held July 29 at the Anderson funeral home at West Branch. The Rev. Irma Guthrie officiated, with burial in West Branch cemetery.

Mrs. Hawley, one of eight children of John and Miriam Walker Leech, was born at West Branch Dec. 31, 1868. She died at University hospital in Iowa City July 26. She had been a patient there the past month with a fractured hip suffered while she was in a nursing home at Toledo.

She attended West Branch school and worked as a seamstress until her marriage to James W. Hawley in March, 1894. They established a home at West Branch, later moving to Waseca, Minn., for two years, then locating at Albert Lea in 1911. They were the parents of five sons.

In 1932 they moved to Marshalltown where she was a member of the Methodist church and active in church affairs so long as her health permitted. Her husband died in 1937 and one son, Walter, preceded her in death in 1953.

She is survived by four sons, Lester Hawley of Kearney, Nebr., Everett of West St. Paul, Minn., John and Floyd of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Adna Leech of Gilman, Wis.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
