5 December 1957 - The Tipton Conservative

Clifford N. Ayres, 57, was instantly killed Friday in a tractor accident at his farm home northeast of Mechanicsville. Ayres had stopped his tractor on an incline in his farmyard and walked behind the machine when it suddenly rolled backward, knocking him down. A rear wheel of the tractor stopped on his chest, crushing him.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville with the Rev. George Gallaher officiating.

The son of Alfred A. and Minnie King Ayres, he was born Jan. 3, 1900, on a farm north of Wilton Junction. He was married to Marguerite Conner June 10, 1924, at Ames.

Following three years of teaching, the couple moved to their farm about a mile northeast of Mechanicsville where they have since made their home.

He was a graduate of Iowa State college, a member of the Mechanicsville Lions club and the Presbyterian church where he served as an elder for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Chase Proper of Monterey, Calif., and a brother, Ben, of Philadelphia, Pa.
