Funeral services for Jay W. Smith, 79, retired Bennett livestock buyer, were held Saturday from the Bennett Methodist church with the Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer officiating. Burial was in the Inland cemetery at Bennett.

Pallbearers were Harold Helmold, Kenneth Horstmann, Francis Eggert, Sylvan Kleppe, Gene Wylie and Mervin Motz. Mrs. Omer Wright, Mrs. Elizabeth Beamer and Carl Martens were in charge of flowers.

Mr. Smith died Oct. 22 at St. Luke's hospital in Davenport following an illness of about six months. He had been in the hospital for 10 days.

Jay Warren, the son of Daniel and Emma Smith, was born in Bennett May 20, 1879. He attended the rural schools of the Bennett community and later attended Dixon Business college at Dixon, Ill.

He was married to Nelle Westfall Feb. 28, 1913, in Tipton at the parsonage of the Reformed church.

Mr. Smith was a livestock buyer and dealer and formed the first Bennett shipping association in 1928 and served as its manager for many years. He also served on the Bennett school board for several years and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Woodmen of America.

He is survived by two sons, J. Warren, Des Moines and Harold W., Bennett; three daughters, Mrs. Florence McKay, Osage Beach, Mo., Mrs. Eleanor Jenkins, South Gate, Calif. and Mrs. Marilyn Jean Swails, Davenport, 10 grandchildren and a great grandchild; a brother, Orville, Muscatine and four sisters, Mrs. Mae Wright, Waterloo; Mrs. Lill Barrett; Mrs. Ella Mowry and Mrs. Nelle Mowry, all of Bennett.

He was preceded in death by his wife in January, 1957 and two brothers and three sisters.
