Funeral services for William Firmend Shirley, 77, former Cedar county superintendent of schools, were held Friday with the Rev. Dr. Jardian of Iowa City in charge. The Rev. Kirby Webster of Marshalltown was in charge of graveside services at Marshalltown.

Mr. Shirley died Wednesday, Dec. 3, at his home in Tipton, following a long illness.

Mr. Shirley was born in Nobel county, Indiana, Jan. 9, 1881, and received his B.A. degree from Wabash college, Crawfordsville, Ind., in 1907. He received his master's degree from Columbia university.

He began his teaching career as football coach and science teacher at East Aurora, Ill., and was principal at Pekin, Ill., Marshalltown, Council Bluffs and Sioux City. He returned to Marshalltown in 1920 as superintendent of schools from 1920 to 1946.

Mr. Shirley was Cedar county superintendent of schools from 1946 to 1948, when he retired because of ill health.

He was married to Leila David in Marshalltown June 21, 1916. He is survived by his wife, a son, David, Chicago, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. Nettie Graucock, Albion, Ind.

Mr. Shirley was an honorary member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, comprising a 27-state area. He served as treasurer of this organization for 9 years and was on the executive board for 15 years. He was a life member of the Iowa State Teachers association, a member of the Association of Retired Teachers, the Masonic lodge and Trinity Episcopal church in Iowa City.
