Martha Birss, 81, a former Tipton lady, died Saturday evening, Aug. 6, at Santori hospital, Cedar Falls, where she had been a patient for one day. She was born Oct. 24, 1873, at Tipton to John and Margaret Gray Birss.

Miss Birss was a practical nurse and for 21 years was superintendent of Mt. Pleasant Home at Dubuque which is a home for children and elderly women. She also served at similar homes in Peoria, Ill., Council Bluffs, Omaha, Toledo and Mason City.

A year ago she retired and has since made her home with her sister, Mrs. Curtis, her sole survivor. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at the Dahl funeral home in Cedar Falls with Rev. George Steele officiating. At 2:30 that afternoon, a graveside service was conducted at the Red Oak Grove cemetery north of Tipton with Rev. Fred M. Smith of Minneapolis, nephew of Miss Birss, officiating.
