16 December 1880 - West Branch Local Record

DIED. J. C. Hoover of rheumatism of the heart, Monday morning, December 13th, 1880, aged ?? years.

J. C. Hoover was born in the State of Ohio, in Miami county, and came to this place in the Spring of 1854, when he was but a boy, and as the links of life were added one by one, the circle of friends widened as the years passed away.

His was a pleasant, sunshiny disposition. Ever happy and cheerful himself, he always had a kind word for all with whom he mingled, thus binding the chain of love and friendship around the children, the youth and the aged.

He was married in the year 187?, and commenced business in this place as a blacksmith, which business he applied himself to with diligence and success until a few years ago, when he engaged in the sale of agricultural implements, which he pursued the remainder of his life. His last days were days of great physical suffering. He seemed to be conscious that his earthly pilgrimage was nearing its close, making such arrangements in regard to his business affairs as seemed right, saying every one must have their dues; and, committing himself and all into the hands of Jesus, he passed from the condition of a justified to a sanctified Christian, and his soul overflowed with love to God and man, inviting all who came into his room to come to Jesus, speaking of a rest in Him which he had never fully realized before.

In the loss of our loved one a vacancy is left in the circle of life which never can be filled. He was a kind husband and father, a respected and useful citizen, and will be sadly missed in business circles.

The funeral took place Monday at 2 o'clock P.M., the members of the Town Council acting as pall-bearers. J.Y.H.
