18 March 1880 - West Branch Local Record

DIED. Thomas Penrose, at his residence in this city, on Friday evening, March 12, 1880, in his 75th year. Buried at Hickory Grove on Sunday at 2 o'clock P.M.

Deceased was a native of Pennsylvania, but when a child, moved with his parents to Jefferson county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood, married his aged companion who still survives him, and where their family--six sons and one daughter, were born and grew to manhood and womanhood. Most of his life Mr. Penrose was actively engaged as a dealer in live stock and merchandizing. He would buy up droves of horses and sheep in Ohio and drive them over the mountains and market them at Philadelphia. In this way he crossed the Allegany mountains some thirty-nine times. In 1830 Mr. Penrose moved to Keokuk county, this State, where he resided until two years ago, when he moved to West Branch. He was an active member of the Society of Friends during life, having had a birthright in that religious sect. He was a loving husband and father, a good citizen, and it can be said truly of him, that those who knew him best loved and honored him the most.
