28 November 1907 - West Branch Times

Samuel Young Leech, the eldest son of Cornelius and Sarah Leech, was born in Columbiana county, O., Dec. 9, 1836. He came to Iowa in the fall of 1854, stopping in Iowa City for a short time. He afterwards settled in Cedar county on a farm near Springdale.

He remained in Cedar county eighteen months when he removed to Marshall county and settled near Le Grand in 1857. He afterwards removed to Tama county in 1863, where he remained for two years, when he again returned to Marshall county and bought a farm near Le Grand. He remained in this section until fourteen years ago when he removed to Marshalltown where he remained until the time of his death, which occurred on Nov. 20, 1907. A year after his removal to Marshalltown he was elected constable and has been reelected every succeeding term.

Mr. Leech was married Jan. 1, 1861, to Ann Eliza Trahern, who survives with five sons, Willis E., Norman D. and Walter Leech of Marshalltown, Louis of Storm Lake and Cornelius of Le Grand. One daughter died in infancy. Three brothers and three sisters also survive the deceased in the persons of William, Santford C. and Alonzo H. Leech of Nodaway county, Missouri; Mrs. Phoebe Richards of Centerville, Kas.; Mrs. Mary Hayworth of Chicago; and Mrs. Ella Plummer of Randolph, Neb.

The funeral was held from his late residence, 605 North First Street, Marshalltown, Saturday, Nov. 23, Rev. E. H. Marshall of the Friends church conducting the services. Interment was in the beautiful cemetery near his home.

He was a man of many friends and few enemies, as was evidenced by the profusion of beautiful flowers that almost covered his coffin and which were contributed in loving remembrance by children, friends, lodges and neighbors. He was of a jovial disposition, even tempered and to know him was to be his friend. He was a kind father, a loving husband and was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors; a greater tribute could not be paid any man.
