22 May 1919 - West Branch Times

George Grant Cariens, son of George and Mary Cariens, was born at Cesne, Wayne county, Illinois, Jan. 15, 1873, and died at his home in West Branch, Iowa, on Wednesday, May 14, at 7:10 a.m., at the age of 46 years and 7 months.

Mr. Cariens was one of a family of nine, all of whom are dead with the exception of a sister, Mrs. Jennie Watson, who is the only surviving member of this family, who is now living at Cesne. The other relatives are two half brothers, John of Ohio and William of Oklahoma; two half sisters, Mrs. M. Cassady of Maryville, Mo., and Zelda Harmon of Streeter, Illinois; and two cousins, James Foraker of Elmira and Andrew Foraker of Oasis.

Mr. Cariens married Miss Lura Curry of Johnsonville, Ill., on Aug. 30, 1893. To this union were born nine children--George, who is now in Germany with the U. S. Army; Mrs. Lilly Roe of Elma, Iowa, and Raymond L., Theodora, Alice, Mildred, Milton, Grant and Leo at home with their mother, all of whom survive and mourn the loss of their father.

Mr. and Mrs. Cariens came from Illinois to Johnson county, Iowa, in December, 1912, and then moved to West Branch where they have lived for the past few years and where they are greatly respected.

Much sympathy is felt for Mrs. Cariens and their family. This was silently manifested by the large amount of beautiful flowers sent by classmates and friends of the family.

Mr. Cariens came from good, Methodist stock and was himself identified with the church for many years.

Services were conducted at the home and church by Rev. G. J. Chalice, pastor of the Methodist church, on Friday, May 16. Interment was in the West Branch cemetery.
