4 May 1905 - West Branch Times

Tuesday morning our citizens were shocked to learn that Mrs. Albert Gaines had been found dead in her bed early in the morning. Mrs. Gaines had been considered in her usual health, with the exception of a cold which had lingered with her for some time. She had also complained of earache the day previous to her death but nothing serious was thought to be the matter with her. Mr. Gaines and two of the little girls were sleeping up stairs and Mrs. Gaines and the other two girls were below. It seems that the door locks in the house are in poor condition and, in order to keep the doors shut they are generally bolted. This was the case with the stair door and when Mr. Gaines arose in the morning he was unable to open the door at the foot of the stairway. He called to his wife for some time but as he got no reply he called to a neighbor, from the second story window, who came and unlocked the door. He proceeded to his wife's room to find her cold in death, with the sleeping little one by her side. A physician was summoned but nothing could be done. The physician stated that, in his opinion, she had died of natural causes, either of heart failure or hemorrhage. The coroner was notified but an inquest was not deemed necessary.

The family moved here but a short time ago, from a farm near Cedar Falls. Mr. Gaines and his four motherless girls will receive the sincere sympathy of their friends and neighbors, in this their great sorrow. Mrs. Gaine's father was telegraphed, at Waterloo, and arrived at 7:35 in the evening, accompanied by an undertaker, who prepared the body for burial. The remains were taken to the old home at Cedar Falls for burial.
