3 April 1919 - West Branch Times

Lorena, eldest daughter of W. G. and Lydia Michener, was born Nov. 24, 1867, and departed this life on March 14, 1919, aged 51 years, 3 months and 20 days.

With the exception of a short residence in Nebraska, her girlhood years were spent in and near West Branch. Here, on June 3, 1891, she was united in marriage with Elmer Hemingway. They moved a few months afterward to Estherville, later to Dubuque and in 1900 to South Chicago.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hemingway were born three children, one dying in infancy, little Hazel, who was the light of their home for nearly three years, and one son, Elmer Jr. They also took into their hearts and home three little boys, who are now grown to manhood and who will mourn the loss of one who was to them a loving mother. They are Gerald W. Roberts (now in France), Cecil L. and Romain B. Roberts of Chicago.

Of her father's family, two have preceded her in death--the mother and a sister, Mrs. Mattie Ross. There are left five brothers--Frank K. of Cedar Rapids, Chas. and Wm. of West Branch and John and Alvin of Webster City; also two sisters--Mrs. Clarence Hollingsworth of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. C. E. Meadows of Estherville.

Her many acquaintances, both here and in her home city, will deeply regret the loss of a true friend and extend their sympathy to the sorrowing relatives, especially to the husband and son in the home, where her thoughts and work were always for those around her. Of her it can truly be said, "She hath done what she could."

The funeral services were held at the home at 9321 Crandon Ave., Chicago, Ill., on March 18th, at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. J. Sidey and Calumet Lodge No. 396, L.A. to B.R.T., of which the deceased was a valued member. Interment was made at Oakwoods where the body will rest beside that of the little daughter.
