26 April 1906 - West Branch Times

Gideon Crew, son of John and Margery Crew, was born Feb. 27, 1827, in Mahoning county, Ohio, and died April 18, 1906, at the home of his son-in-law, J. A. Westfall, Cedar county, Iowa, aged 79 years, 1 month and 21 days.

He grew to manhood in the place of his nativity. In 1851 he was married to Rebecca Brantingham and in 1861, with his young family, he came to Iowa and settled in Cedar county near Springdale, where he lived for twenty years.

In 1873 the mother of his children was called home, which was a severe blow. He was twice married afterward. In 1886 he moved to Kansas, where he made his home till about two years ago, when failing health forced him to give up his home and come to the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Westfall to be cared for in his declining days.

He was a life time and consistent member of the Friends church, at different times holding offices in the church. His was a quiet retired disposition. His character was pure and upright and he was an example of patience to the last.

He leaves to mourn his loss an aged wife, who, like himself, was obliged to lean on her children in her declining years, three sons, Chas. A., of Pasadena, Cal.; Edward E., of San Jose, Cal.; G. Al, of Los Angeles, Cal.; three daughters Mrs. J. A. Westfall and Mrs. F. J. Butler, of Springdale and Mrs. J. A. Barrington of Pasadena, Cal.; and three aged sisters and two brothers in the east.
