At the age of 22 years he came to America and on Sept. 2, 1850, was united in marriage to Ann Harrison, in the city of Philadelphia. The young couple removed to Salem, Ohio, where they lived about one year, coming to Iowa in June, 1852, and they have made their home in this vicinity ever since.

His wife preceded him in death but a few months, passing away June 7, 1907.

Thirteen children were born to this couple, 8 of whom still survive.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Congregation church in England. After coming to Iowa he united with the Fairview Presbyterian church, transferring his membership to West Branch when he removed to this place.

Death came to him as a relief from affliction and suffering which he had endured for several years. He lived and died a much respected citizen among a host of friends.
