21 October 1909 - West Branch Times

The following is taken from the Chanute (Kan.) Daily Tribune and will be of interest to a number of the older residents of this community. The deceased, Barclay Munday, was at one time a resident farmer in this section, and was the grandfather of Mrs. H. H. Michener of this place.

"Barclay Munday, the oldest man in Chanute, died at 1 o'clock Friday morning Oct. 15th, 1909, at the home of Mrs. Milroy, 1026 South Steuben avenue. The funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in McCabe Chapel at the corner of Fifteenth and Highland. They were conducted by Elder G. W. Kitchen, pastor of the Christian church.

Mr. Munday was born in Bucks county, Penn. June 13, 1819. He learned the trade of cabinet maker and worked for many years at his trade in Philadelphia. He was also in the undertaking business there for a time.

Although he did not take much part in the public affairs, he was greatly interested in current events, and was well informed on everything that was happening, being a great reader of newspapers.

It is said of him that he was present when the republican party was born and that he attended its first national convention.

He came to Kansas thirty-six years ago, settling in this state in 1873, and had lived in Chanute twenty-five years. His wife died a quarter of a century ago on the farm near Chanute where the family was living at that time.

They were the parents of six children only one of them living--Mrs. J. W. Eaton, 1403 South Highland Avenue. She was in constant attendance upon him during his last illness and was at his bedside when death came to him.

He has seven grand children living in Chanute and six in Iowa. He was a Quaker and a member of the Friends church."
