Thomas Brubaker died at the home of his son, Ralph, five miles east of Iowa City at noon Monday last. This venerable man followed his calling of shoemaker at Iowa City for many years, moved to West Branch several years ago, where he followed his trade until this spring. Failing health caused him to seek a home with his daughter, Mrs. Roegle. He went on Sunday to visit his son and was taken worse and passed away at noon on Monday.

19 October 1905 - West Branch Times

Mr. Thomas Brubaker died at the home of his son, Ralph, in Scott township, Monday, Oct. 9, 1905 at twelve o'clock, noon.

He had been failing for some time. About ten weeks ago he gave up his business at West Branch where he had been located for the past seventeen years and came to stay with his daughter, Mrs. John Roegle. The doctor gave no hopes for his complete recovery but said he could see no reason why he should not be quite comfortable for some time to come.

After staying with his daughter nine weeks he seemed quite comfortable and strong and at this time expressed a desire to visit his son, Ralph. The days being fine he went there Sunday, Oct. 1, and seemed to be as well as usual until Tuesday morning when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, the right side of his body being affected. From this time all hope was given up and it was only a question of time till the end should come.

He was married to Miss Rebecca Spicer in Bedford county, Penn., March 25, 1851 and moved to Iowa City in 1852 where they lived thirty-six years, then moved to West Branch where his wife died, Aug. 11, 1901. He is survived by three children, Mrs. George Strable of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. John Roegle and Ralph T. Brubaker both of Scott township.

Being an old resident of Iowa City he was one of the strongest business men of his time. At one time he was a member of Eureka Lodge I.O.O.F., and was always an enthusiastic lover of the principles of that order. "Kindness to all and malice toward none," was the motto that he carried out in all his business and his social relations.
