3 April 1919 - West Branch Times

Stina L. Jobson was born August 27, 1832, in Sweden, where she grew to womanhood. On Feb. 24, 1856 she was united in marriage to Samuel F. Pettis and in August, 1859, they arrived at Castle Garden, New York City, and went immediately to Riceville, Penn., where they settled on the farm that was their home for more than fifty years. Here to them were born nine children, all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Of these six survive, Alfred of Kellerton, Iowa; Albert W. of Chicago, Ill.; Joseph H. of Mt Ayr, Iowa; Mrs. Sadie J. Phelps of West Branch, Iowa; Mrs. Teenie P. Burrows of Meadville, Pa., and Mrs. Harry H. Willey of Union City, Pa. Besides these she is survived by one sister, twelve grand children and one great grandchild.

On Feb. 24, 1906, Mr. and Mrs. Pettis celebrated their golden wedding and the following year they retired from the farm and moved to Union City, Penn., where they resided until the death of Mr. Pettis, which occurred in 1912. Since that time Mrs. Pettis has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Phelps, where she passed away on the evening of March 28, 1919, aged 86 years, 76 months, 1 day.

Her long life was filled with labor, love and devotion to her family, her home and her friends. She was by nature very cheerful and she met the problems and sorrows of life with a faith and courage that was marvel to all who knew her. She was a consistent member of the Methodist church of Riceville, Penn., where she did active work for many years and to which she has always contributed with unusual devotion.

As a neighbor she was loved by all. She was never too busy to respond to a call for help and her sympathy, kindliness and ability was always a source of comfort and inspiration and the memory of her good deeds will long survive her. Her's was a peaceful ending to a Perfect Life.

A short service was conducted at the home of Mrs. E. J. Phelps by the pastor of the M.E. church. The body was then taken to Union City, Penn., where her remains were laid to rest in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery and to await the resurrection of the just.
