10 July 1919 - West Branch Times

John Lodge was born in East Fairfield, Ohio, January 13, 1830. He came to Iowa, March 20, 1857, settling on a farm near Downey, where he lived for almost sixty years. The last three years of his life were spent at the home of his son, Urban E. Lodge, of West Liberty.

He was united in marriage to Mary H. Holloway, November 4, 1855. To this union were born eight children: Lizzie, who died at the age of six with diptheria; Marquis H., who was killed on the railroad in Butte, Mont.; Dayton, who died in infancy; Clarence of West Branch; Almon Edson of Weiser, Idaho; Albert W. of Haswell, Colo.; William O. of Orchard and Urban E. of West Liberty.

Mrs. Lodge proceded her husband in death. She just lacked six months of reaching the four score mark. Together this husband and wife were permitted to live for almost sixty years. He had been a member of the Baptist church in Downey for many years. He was a charter member of that church. He was faithful to the church of his choice and attended its services as long as he was able.

He had been in failing health for the past five years. During the last thirty days he was most critically ill. On Tuesday night, July 1, 1919, at 10:45 o'clock, his summons came and he slept, being aged at the time of his death, 89 years, 5 months and 18 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss five sons as mentioned above, a number of more distant relatives and a large circle of friends and acquaintances.

The funeral services were conducted from the home of his son, Urban E. Lodge, in West Liberty by the Rev. Charles B. Hankins, pastor of the M.E. church and the body was laid to rest in the Downey cemetery.
