27 November 1919 - West Branch Times

According to a telegram received Tuesday evening, Jason Negus passed away at three o'clock of that day at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. Zwickey at Detroit, Mich. The family had no intimation that he was not in usual health, and the news of his death was a shock. He left here about ten days ago for his daughter's home to spend the winter there.

4 December 1919 - West Branch Times

Jason Negus, son of Israel and Lydia Garwood Negus, was born March 3, 1838. He departed this life Nov. 25, 1919, aged 81 years, 8 months and 22 days. His brother, Jesse lives near West Branch, Iowa.

When quite young he was left motherless, and was cared for by his grandfather, Garwood, in Pennsylvania, until his father's marriage to Ruth Warrington.

When but a youth he came with his father to Iowa in 1849 and settled soon thereafter in Springdale Neighborhood, where the remainder of his life has been largely spent.

In 1864 he was married to Ester C. Gruwell. To this union were born three children--Alva of Keswick, Iowa, a physician now in the U.S. army hospital service at Ft. Sheridan, Lydia Ann Zwickey of Detroit, Mich. and Edwin who resides on the old homestead near Springdale, Iowa.

The wife and mother of this family was taken by death Nov. 6, 1895. On Jan. 31, 1900, he was united in marriage to Emily Jones of Salem, Ohio, which union was broken by her death Nov. 26, 1916.

He had recently gone to Detroit with the hope and prospect of spending the winter in the home of his daughter. At 3:00 p.m. on Nov. 25, he was stricken with apoplexy, and death came within a few moments.

The last days of his life were especially filled with gratitude to his Heavenly Father, manifest by word of mouth and deeds of kindness.

He was a birthright member of the Friends church, which affiliation he loved and cherished to the end, his membership having been transferred from Springdale to West Branch about ten years ago. The welfare of the church, the spiritual interests of all people and the advancement of all public movements for the moral welfare of the community, the nation and the world stood foremost in his mind and endeavors.

Funeral services were held from the Springdale Friends church on Friday, Nov. 28, 1919, at 10:30 a.m., by Rev. W. H. Wilson of West Branch, assisted by Rev. Anna Smith of Springdale. Interment in Springdale cemetery.
