Esther Anna Swain Gruwell was born in Stark county, Ohio, June 3, 1842. Was married to William W. Gruwell of Cedar county, Iowa, May 29, 1863.

To this union was born six children. They first settled in Marshall county, Iowa, and then came to Cedar county, where they lived for nearly 30 years. About 3 years ago they moved to Des Moines. The husband preceded her in death Nov. 11, 1904. She was a devoted Christian wife and mother and patiently bore her sufferings, passing peacefully away at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, May 8, 1907. Her remains were brought here for interment by the side of her husband.

The funeral services being held in Downey Street Friends church, May 10, at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by John Y. Hoover. The children were all present except one son.
