20 March 1919 - West Branch Times

Achsah H. Mott, daughter of Caleb and Mary Fowler, was born 9th mo. 3rd 1824, at Sandy Spring, Columbiana county, Ohio.

At the age of thirteen she removed to Washington county, Ohio, with her parents, who were among the early pioneers of that section, making the trip down the Ohio river by boat to what was at that time almost an unbroken wilderness, her father and brothers clearing for themselves a home in the timber where the only roads were bridle paths.

In 1846 she was married to Smith Heald. To this union were born three children, Maryetta Armstrong, Milton Heald and Ruthanna Heald, all of whom preceded their mother to the Better Land. At the time of their marriage this young couple rode on horseback 20 miles to the nearest market town and brought back with them all that they had of household goods except what was made at home. She was early left a widow and for several years braved the hardships of pioneer life alone.

In 1868 she was united in marriage to James E. Mott. To this union were born four children, Smith H. Mott of Mankato, Minn., John W. Mott of Boulder, Colo., Dr. Geo. Henry Mott of Santaquin, Utah, and Mary P. Mott of Mankato, Minn.

In 1902 she came to West Branch and purchased the home on Fifth street, where she and her daughter lived for several years until her failing strength made it necessary for her to break up her home.

About six years ago she was taken to the home of S. H. Mott at Mankato, Minn., where she was cared for through a lingering illness. She passed away 3rd mo. 13th, 1919, at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 10 days.

The funeral was held at the Friends Meeting House on 2nd street, 3rd mo. 17th at 3 p.m. and she was laid to rest in the Friends burying ground at Hickory Grove.

She was a life-long member of the Society of Friends, which faith she kept until death. And we have the comforting assurance that she has passed from death unto life.

Those from a distance in attendance were J. W. Mott of Boulder, Colo., S. H. Mott and wife and Mary P. Mott of Mankato, Minn., Mary Young and daughter, Jesse Mott and Mary Hobson of Whittier, Iowa, Wm. Mott and wife of Iowa City, Jesse Marris of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Albert Douglass of West Liberty, Iowa.
