14 May 1903 - West Branch Times

In the early morning hours of the 24th of 4th month the spirit of Lizzie M. Fawcett, wife of Logan Fawcett passed to the great beyond, and the tired body that for almost two years had been racked with pain and suffering was at rest.

Lizzie Fawcett, the second daughter of William and Eliza Thomas, was born in Tama county, this state, 8th month 17, 1876. When four years of age her parents moved to their present home near Centerdale. Here she grew to womanhood, developing a character of unusual firmness and stability. With a strong sense of right and wrong she had the courage of her convictions and ever stood firm for whatever she considered her duty.

In 1895 she graduated from the Scattergood Seminary and afterward taught in the Friends' schools here and in Linn county. A devoted daughter and sister, she found her greatest happiness in the home life and in loving ministration to those she held so dear.

On the 10th of the 4th month, 1900, she was united in marriage with Logan M. Fawcett. Surrounded by all the comforts of life and happy in each other's love, husband and wife looked forward to a long and happy future. But how futile are human plans! Three months after her marriage she was thrown from a buggy in a runaway and sustained a severe fracture of the left arm. She never afterward was well, though she made a brave struggle to keep up and not a murmur escaped her lips. However, the dread disease, consumption, bore her down. The past winter, accompanied by her husband and sister, she spent in the south, but the change failed to benefit her and she longed greatly to return home.

On the 24th of the 3rd month was the glad morning when she returned to her father's house and to the embrace of those whose hearts had so yearned over her during her absence. And we doubt not when the angel of death visited her just one month later that she received as glad a welcome to her Father's home above.

It is hard to understand why one so well fitted to live should be so early called away,--why the home into which had been put so much loving care and thought and around which such fond hopes centered should be left desolate. We can only comfort ourselves with the thought that the ones best fitted to live are the ones best fitted to die.

The funeral was held from Hickory Grove meeting house 4th month 26th. A large concourse of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of love and respect to the deceased and show their sympathy to the bereaved ones who mourn, but not as those who have no hope.
