31 December 1903 - West Branch Times

Hannah Hurst was born in Adams county, Pennsylvania, June 3, 1820. She was married to James Phelps, Aug. 18, 1850, who preceded her to the other shore Oct. 14, 1896. She was one of the pioneers of Iowa, having lived in Cedar county over forty years.

The funeral services were conducted at the Friends church, Springdale, by Rev. Davis, of the M.E. church, and the remains were laid to rest in the Springdale cemetery.

She was loved and reverenced by all who knew her, for her kind and unassuming ways and useful deeds. Early in life she learned to trust her Savior who was her stay and comfort, until she was called home on the evening of Dec. 26, 1903, aged 83 years, 6 months and 21 days. She united with the M.E. church in 1866 and was a consistent member the remainder of her life. Three sons and one daughter, nineteen grandchildren and one great grandchild are left to mourn her loss.
